Calvary's Question: Where Would You Stand?
Have you ever thought about the two thieves that were crucified with Jesus?
The story mentioned in Luke 23:32-43 about these two men is short and doesn't have many details. We don't know their names, ages, if they were married, or if they had children. We only get a quick look into their lives, but it's at the most important moment of their lives.
Both men:
-
Are accused criminals
-
Are condemned to death by crucifixion
-
Met Jesus
-
Make a choice
-
Speak to Jesus
-
Breathe their last breath
The crucial moment in their lives, and the biggest difference between the two men, lies in their response to Jesus.
One man opted to align himself with the rulers and soldiers, mocking Jesus' claim to be the Messiah, the King of the Jews.
The other man took a different stance, rebuking the mocker and acknowledging that they both deserved their punishment. Furthermore, he recognized Jesus' innocence and authority, asking Him to remember him when He entered His Kingdom.
The words 'Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.' stand in stark contrast to the sentiments expressed by the surrounding rulers, soldiers, and crowd.
And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
This man's choice to believe in Jesus changed the course of his destiny.
It wasn't this man's name, age, accomplishments, or past that changed his eternal destiny; it was his choice to believe in Jesus. A simple choice that made all the difference.
Although this encounter at Calvary was brief, we see the power of choice and the profound impact of faith.
The story of the two thieves reminds us that our response to Jesus can shape our eternal destiny. Will we align ourselves with doubt and mockery, or will we, like the repentant thief, recognize Jesus' authority and embrace His promise of salvation?
Let's choose to believe in Jesus, to trust in His grace, and to walk in the light of His love.
Our hope and assurance is that regardless of our circumstances, it's never too late to turn to Him and find redemption.
God is Good!!
Thank you, Father God, for always giving us a choice. For never leaving us or forsaking us. For even when we have chosen poorly so many times before, you give us an opportunity to choose life when we hear about your son Jesus. May we always choose life in your son Jesus. Amen! Amen!
